The Year of the Horse is approaching, and we are joyously welcoming the new year! Last year, Wai Square, a MTR mall that is rooted in the Tai Wai community, launched the 'Tai Wai Life Festival' for the first time and received widespread acclaim. This year, it is back by popular demand. From January 20th until the Lunar New Year, the 'Tai Wai Life Festival 2026' will be held with the theme of 'Pinwheel Art Appreciation' to promote the regional characteristics and festive traditions of Tai Wai. This year's event concept is inspired by the bustling Che Kung Temple. Wai Square has invited multiple local art and design units to join hands and use pinwheels as a medium to create a series of unique and innovative decorations and activities, connecting deeply with the community and wishing the community a smooth and prosperous year ahead.
The event specially creates six major pinwheel-themed check-in spots, including a six-meter-tall 'Horse' art installation designed by renowned architect Mr. Siu Kwok-kin, who was born and raised in Sha Tin District. Installed in the mall's atrium, the galloping horse signifies success. The 'Pinwheel Light and Shadow Fantasy Sea' on the outdoor platform is composed of over a thousand colorful pinwheels, symbolizing auspiciousness and prosperity in the new year. There are also five giant pinwheels designed by local original brands, allowing citizens to turn them by hand and wish for a prosperous year with thriving industries. The two major themed pinwheel walls in the mall combine visual design with auspicious blessings, wishing for wealth and harmonious relationships in the new year. In addition, the footbridge leading to the Che Kung Temple from the mall is also filled with pinwheels, welcoming citizens to visit Tai Wai during the Spring Festival.
To enhance the festive atmosphere, the mall has invited the famous geomancerer, Mr. Lee Seng-chu, to host a fortune-telling session on the sixth day of the new year (February 22nd) and answer questions from the audience on-site and online, providing fortune-telling guidance for the new year.
To showcase the community stories of Tai Wai, Wai Square has collaborated with the local organization 'Street Neighbors' and the travel guide 'explore_hongkong' to organize a series of community tours with diverse themes, allowing everyone to walk for good luck and visit scenic spots during the Spring Festival, gaining a deeper understanding of Tai Wai from multiple perspectives.
During the Spring Festival, there will also be lucky draws! From January 20th, MTR Mobile registered users can earn extra 8,888 MTR Points by making a single electronic purchase of HK$800 or more at Wai Square (excluding catering, supermarkets, and services) and successfully earning MTR Points. At the same time, users can also follow the 'Tai Wai Life Festival' map to participate in the 'Spin for Good Luck' check-in challenge and receive up to HK$950 in Wai Square designated category electronic coupons. There will be additional check-in rewards on specific dates.
Annual Theme 'Pinwheel Art Appreciation' - Six Major Pinwheel-themed New Year Installations Inside and Outside the Mall
This year's 'Tai Wai Life Festival 2026' takes 'Pinwheel Art Appreciation' as its theme, cleverly integrating the traditional pinwheel culture of Che Kung Temple with modern art design. Multiple pinwheel-themed installations are set up inside and outside the mall, inviting citizens and their loved ones to make wishes in front of the 'Horse', capture the dazzling 'Light and Shadow Fantasy Sea', turn the giant pinwheels in the 'Pinwheel Art Garden', take photos at the 'Wealth' and 'Love' pinwheel walls, and then walk through the 'Pinwheel Bridge' to visit Che Kung Temple. Turning the pinwheels signifies a turn for the better, wishing everyone a smooth and prosperous year, family peace, and good fortune!
Art Installation 'Horse'
Coinciding with the upcoming Year of the Horse, to welcome the new spring of the Jiawu year, Mr. Siu Kwok-kin, a local renowned architect who grew up in Sha Tin District, specially crafted the six-meter-tall 'Horse' art installation. The horse has a sleek physique, composed of over 500 triangular geometric shapes. Each triangular component is engraved with a 'blessing' pattern, and the entire artwork is adorned with over 2,800 blessings, symbolizing continuous blessings and abundant luck. The art installation intentionally faces the horse's head toward the lucky direction of the year - the northeast, embodying the spirit of 'looking forward' and signifying success and smoothness in the new year.
The horse stands proudly on a grassland made up of 332 small pinwheels, each spinning gently on its own and adorned with 'blessing' patterns, peach blossoms, and money designs, symbolizing blessings of fortune, love, and wealth for the citizens.
'Pinwheel Light and Shadow Fantasy Sea'
Over a thousand colorful pinwheels at the L2 Horticulture Garden of Wai Square form a dazzling 'Pinwheel Light and Shadow Fantasy Sea'. The pinwheels are equipped with lighting effects, shining brightly day and night, symbolizing the flourishing luck of the Tai Wai District, auspiciousness, and the happiness and well-being of the residents. During the day, the pinwheels gently spin in the wind, reflecting sparkling light. At night, the lights gradually change colors, creating a dreamlike visual feast. During the Spring Festival, you are invited to stop by with your loved ones, take festive photos, capture the joyful moments, and spend a happy reunion time.
'Pinwheel Art Garden'
Collaborating with five highly creative local brands - 'LOUDER x Dotdoart', 'Papery Art', 'Seon HK', 'Amazing Studio', and 'Handmadeship' - this installation showcases the vitality and ingenuity of Hong Kong's local designs while integrating traditional Spring Festival cultural elements into contemporary designs, embodying the aesthetics of blending old and new. Citizens only need to turn the one-meter-diameter giant pinwheels by hand to symbolize activating good luck for the new year, wishing for a prosperous year with thriving industries. Let creativity and tradition spin together in the wind, bringing the most heartfelt and innovative New Year blessings.
'Golden Pinwheel Wall'
A pinwheel wall that shimmers with golden light is set up in the L5 activity space of the mall, symbolizing auspicious wealth. The pinwheels gently spin in the wind, resembling a flow of gold and a gathering of fortune. It brings well-wishes of financial success and blessings to all passersby. Visitors can also take photos at the lucky spot for wealth in the new year and turn the pinwheels to embrace luck and welcome a prosperous new year.
'Peach Blossom Pinwheel Wall'
A 'Love Pinwheel Wall' is specially set up on L2 of the mall, located at the lucky spot for love in the new year, wishing everyone abundant love and a happy relationship.
'Che Kung Temple Road Pinwheel Bridge'
The footbridge leading to Che Kung Temple is the lucky spot for wealth in the new year, so the mall has specially installed over a thousand wealth pinwheels on both sides of the bridge, spinning in the wind and bringing blessings of financial success to everyone.
